Will Pepper, Ph.D. solves more business problems than Sherlock Holmes solves crimes. Check out our conversation below.
- Q: Can you tell us more about yourself, and your company?
A: Besides that I’m an extroverted techie, which I jokingly say is more rare than a leprechaun riding a unicorn? (laughs) Well, I’ve got a little over twenty years helping businesses conquer tech problems, and let me tell you, I really love working with new businesses. It makes my day when we help a company save money. That means Christmas bonuses get paid and jobs are secure.
Additionally, I’m proud of my community, marriage, family, friends, and my Faith. Also, I really am a “Dr. Pepper”, though please do not try to drink me (laughs)! That’d make this a really awkward interview.
- Q: What inspired you to create betterthanfree.info?
A: Better Than Free, LLC (“BTF”) started because my wife and I wanted to improve our community. Together, we tackle problems other people cannot, and provide solutions that are not broad strokes; they are actionable steps. I’m able to explain business solutions in simple, non-techie terms. My wife’s background in economic development and marketing combines into a one-two punch of awesomeness. Yes, I’m biased, but she’s awesome. I’m allowed to say that. Look, technology either bothers, intimidates, or flat out scares people. Don’t worry; it does that to me too! The way you beat that feeling is by taking steps, and I’ve gotten pretty good at walking.
People do not have to do face business problems alone. That’s why we do this.
- Q: What are 3 of the most common issues that businesses face in regards to technology?
A: Truth: people are worried about changes. Further, managers hate technology change, not just because they think it’s a hassle for them, because they have to take new risks. They have to learn new tech and then teach it to employees or at least work closely with consultants in order to get their team trained properly. After all, they manage people, not computers, right? Unfortunately, businesses are (1) wasting money using the wrong technology, (2) wasting employee/manager time by using the wrong technology, and (3) so full of technology apprehension, or anxiety and stress, that they view any change as a bad choice, because “we’ve always done it this way.” Well, “We’ve-Always-Done-It-This” Way is a horrible name for a street, and an even worse business practice.
- Q: How do your services help startups, small businesses, and charities overcome their business technology obstacles?
A: We help businesses overcome those stressful decisions through team-building exercises that allows your whole core team to know their input is important to the company and to the decision process. BTF guides the core team to flush out the business’s true technology needs and helps them save time and money in the long run. Again, we want to see others succeed. Helps me sleep at night, and I love my sleep!
- Q: If you could give 1 piece of advice to entrepreneurs, what would it be?
A: Don’t be afraid of change. Learn, then look, before you leap, and you will be fine. Do take note: I’m talking about technology changes, not jumping off cliffs.
Thanks for having me Jan!
