Cannabis startup, Caliva has recently teamed up with Ben and Jerry’s, the popular ice cream brand to give away free ice cream on 4/20 – the holiday celebrated by marijuana aficionados far and wide. The promotion is offered to anyone who places a delivery order from Caliva (on April 19th- 20th). Customers ordering during this time will receive a complimentary pint of Ben and Jerry’s “Half Baked” flavor of ice cream.
Caliva made its launch in 2015 and is a premier cannabis dispensary and cultivation company, located in San Jose, California. They recently made a huge splash in the startup scene when they raised $75M in funding from former Yahoo CEO, Carol Bartz and Joe Montana.
In addition, Caliva will be donating 4.20 percent of the total sales on 4/20 to the non-profit Code for America to bring more awareness to the Clear My Record Program. In light of cannabis and hemp decriminalization and legalization in America, there is still a growing number of minorities who experience more extreme punishments than their white counterparts. Despite this progressive climate, the amount of arrests made for cannabis possession has astonishingly increased to around 660,000 from 2016 to 2017. According to the Clear My Record website, “Clear My Record is a free, nonprofit, service for people with a criminal record in select California counties.” The site goes on to mention that “Clearing your record can help remove barriers to new jobs, housing, and educational opportunities.”
The free ice cream partnership between Caliva and Ben and Jerry’s takes a stand against political injustice for those who have been harshly punished for marijuana usage and possession in the USA. In a recent press release, Caliva’s CEO, Dennis O’Malley said “What could be better to celebrate 420 than Caliva’s products and Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked ice cream?”
