Sweet Startups: Hi, please tell us about yourself and your company.
SHE: I’ve worked in the professional beauty industry most of my life. In fact, my wife has also worked in the industry for over twenty-five years. I’ve been on both sides of the salon/beauty supply relationship. Working in the salon as well as selling to salons. I’ve visited salons and spas in almost every state and even salons overseas. After years of presenting products to salon and spa owners, I had an opportunity to create a product of my own.
The idea for SHE dawned on me one day after meeting with a salon client who was describing her frustration with her hair, skin, and nails. She said she had a hard time eating a balanced diet and her first meal of the day was often a coffee, as she runs out-the-door. Due to her poor diet, her nails were brittle, and her hair was thinning at an alarming rate.
Our research showed she wasn’t alone. Three out of four women don’t eat a balanced diet. Busy, hectic schedules, make it more difficult than ever to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Sweet Startups: What inspired you to create this brand?
SHE: Until SHE, there were very few products available in salons and spas specifically designed to help promote healthy hair, skin, and nails. Once we identified the problem, we followed up by surveying hundreds of women asking them what they thought of a “drinkable beauty” vitamin product like SHE. The response was overwhelming. 85% of the women we surveyed said they felt a product like SHE would be easy to make part of their lifestyles and, at the same time, meet all of their daily hair, skin and nail nutritional needs.
Sweet Startups: What are some of the health benefits of drinking “She”?
SHE: SHE provides your body with 22 vitamins, mineral, and antioxidants. It’s lower in calories, vegan, gluten free and contains no preservatives. It’s very easy on the digestive tract so you can drink it on an empty stomach. So, as you’re running-out-the-door after skipping breakfast, grab a SHE, get your nutrition, and get energized in one, 8.4oz serving. One SHE per day helps maintain healthy looking hair, skin, and nails.
Sweet Startups: Where can people find your products?
SHE: Currently, SHE is sold on our website, drinkshe.com and in the Northeastern U.S. This spring and summer, we are rolling out SHE throughout the United States via distribution.
Sweet Startups: Any expert tips for entrepreneurs?
SHE: I’m asked this question often.
People will say “you’re crazy”, “don’t waste your time”, “that’s a terrible idea”.
If YOU believe in your idea. Pursue it!
Be tough. Be determined. Be prepared to hear the word “NO”… a lot. Don’t take no for an answer!
Be organized. Be prepared to work long, odd hours.
Be a voracious reader and consumer of everything that pertains to your market idea.
If you have an idea, do your research.
Meaning, google will become your best friend.
1. Is your product or service already on the market?
If so, don’t despair. Figure out a way to improve on the product or service.
2. If possible, talk to people who are successfully working in the field you’d like to be in or bring your product into. Entrepreneurs are some of the most generous people you’ll ever meet. They will be delighted to give advice and point you in the right direction.
3. Don’t spend money on your idea until you’ve followed step one and two (both free). Once you’ve decided to embark on your dream, have someone help you write a business plan. This will help keep you on-track. Your business plan is your roadmap. Update your business plan at least once per quarter. Don’t be surprised or upset if your plan changes. Often, when one road is blocked, another road can still get you to your destination.
Keep an open mind and don’t be offended when someone offers advice about your idea.
18 or 80.
It’s never too early, or too late, to follow your dream.
Do it today!
