Celebrate Women’s History Month with bold, exciting shades of lipstick! Vegan and cruelty-free lipstick startup, The Lip Bar, recently opened its first retail location in downtown Detroit, making it the first store of its kind in the area. The store is one of several new businesses that recently opened its doors this year.
Founder Melissa Butler launched the brand in 2012 and has been growing it ever since. She enthusiastically created The Lip Bar when she saw that there was a need for beauty without chemicals, more color options, and products that celebrate diversity. Prior to her brick and mortar store opening, Butler sold at pop-up locations. The products are also offered nation-wide in over 500 Target stores.
Why we love The Lip Bar?
This shop is innovative and is like no other cosmetics store. Imagine walking into the doors and seeing a fun and playful layout where you can sit on swings, drink free champaign, and check out countless shades of lipware. It’s the perfect “girly girl” store that lets you rediscover makeup in a practical and minimal way. We also love that it uses vegan ingredients, which is a huge plus for any makeup lover who also happens to be an animal lover. The Lip Bar really takes lipstick to a fresh, new and exciting level!
The Lip Bar is located at 1435 Farmer St., Suite 122 (behind the Shinola Hotel in Parker’s Alley). Butler invested in her brand along with a $20,000 contribution from Motor City Match, a local grant resource that helps pair business owners with available Detroit real estate. The Shinola Hotel recently opened its own doors as well, in a joint venture between Shinola/Detroit LLC and Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock LLC. Shinola is a longtime Detroit-based brand, that is best known for its luxury watches, bikes, and leatherware. This collaboration is a great effort for Detroit businesses to flourish while promoting the city positively.
