Please introduce yourselves to our audience.
Hello my name is Tamikia Samuels-McKiver. I am a licensed cosmetologist, a cosmetology instructor, a salon owner and an inventor of the Silky Curls hair rollers.
My name is Judith Marie Jamison. I am a business expert, consultant, entrepreneur and inventor. I hold a Masters degree in Information Systems and a Bachelors in Business Administration. I am also a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).
Tell us a little about your new invention Silky Curls.
Judith: Silky Curls is a patent-pending product, which is designed to create long-lasting spiral curls and deep waves without damage. Our patent consists of a flexible rod outlined in delicate silk fibers. It is specially designed to alleviate prints, creases and snagging, which are commonly encountered by traditional roller usage. Silky Curls eliminates the need for excessive heat and produces durable curls that promote healthy hair growth.
How did you guys come up with the concept?
Tamikia: Judith and I have been best friends since high school. We attended Ben L. Smith High School together in our hometown, Greensboro, North Carolina. After graduation, Judith moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. She was a fan of curls, but found it difficult to maintain them on her own. I noticed her hair was thinning, and I believed it was from the rollers she was using nightly. I suggested she use satin rollers, but we discovered there were none on the market that could produce the type of curls she liked. That’s when we decided to produce our own curlers. It took close to two years and several proto-types. But we finally got it done and Silky Curls were born!
What makes Silky Curls stand apart from other rollers?
Judith: I believe the quality of our product and its unique design makes us stand apart. Our rods are made out of silk. They are delicately crafted to prevent creases and snagging, and they are safe for daily usage. It also has a proven track record for promoting healthy hair growth. That’s what makes Silky Curls unique!
What can we expect in the future from the Silky Curl product line?
Tamikia: Well we have several things in the works. My specialty is healthy hair care. I want to design a line of products that are affordable and help women maintain their hair. We are currently making a variety of sizes in our Silky Curls hair roller line to accommodate all hair lengths. We also have the kid’s line in Silky Curls that are in the works. In addition, we are working on a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner with an edge control. Our goal is to create the best natural product line possible that is practical and affordable.
What advice would you give others who want to set up their own beauty product line?
Judith: You have to be committed to research and development. To ensure your product’s success you must know the market and what is needed.
Tamikia: As a salon owner and cosmetology instructor, I’ve had the privilege to gain direct insight on what’s needed and what works for healthy hair care. We all have a variety of hair textures, so I was blessed with the ability to try out our products on several different people, with all hair types. This is important! If you are setting up a new line, you must do research and know what works for a variety of different hair types.
How can customers purchase your products?
Judith: Customers can visit our website: www.mysilkycurls.com. Or they can purchase our products on Amazon or EBay. Residents in Greensboro, North Carolina can go to Simply Beautiful and pick them up. All this information is available on our company website.
