A woman with a big dream is set to open a cosmetology school – a 9,000-square foot building that was once home to an auto body shop, has undergone a beautiful transformation into a beauty academy.
Shaneka Hammond Brown, cosmetologist and owner of SHB International Hair Studio in Conway, is slated to offer classes in June after the purchase and renovation of the Third Avenue auto shop. She is branding the academy as the “first African-American owned beauty school in Horry County.” According to the school’s website, the first 20 students who are enrolled and approved will receive scholarships.
The cosmetology program is open to students who have a high school diploma or GED, are at least 17 years of age or older, carry a valid license or state issued id, and complete all required paperwork. A minimum of 1500 hours is required for the $10,900 course to become a certified cosmetologist. Additional courses for estheticians and nail techs will be offered in the future.
In a statement on the school’s site, Hammond Brown shares what inspired her to start the school, “GOD directed her to open “SHB International Hair Academy” in 2019 located in downtown Conway, SC”, the site said.
SHB International Hair Academy features 17 stylist stations, shampoo bowls, esthetician tables, nail and pedicure stations as well as a classroom for over 100 students. The salon was also moved into the school and is in the back of the building.
The DREAM & BELIEVE Celebration, a special event to honor the opening of the school, will occur on May 18, at 7pm. The address is 1401 and 1403 Third Avenue in Conway, SC. There will be music, food and networking. Guests are required to provide a donation, which will go towards the school’s scholarship program.
