Nigel Sharland is an accountant with nearly 3 decades of success. Check out our interview below, as he shares his story from his UK office (pictured above), and gives his secret tip to overcoming any challenge.

  1. Q: Can you please provide our readers with a brief background about yourself and your services?

A: My name is Nigel Sharland and I have been an accountant for over 30 years in the UK. I started out in the west end of London working for a few small to medium size firms while gaining experience within the industry. After a successful time helping clients within firms I decided that I could give more to my customers then they were currently being offered and went out alone. One of my biggest achievements was opening up my first office in the west end that has been running successfully now for 23 years and has been a fundamental part of our business. Aside from my accountancy business I have had involvement in running and owning many successful companies that have allowed me to build up a greater understanding of what my clients are looking for as I truly have been on the other side of the desk.

Away from business I like to keep active enjoy playing tennis and classic cars is a passion of mine. We now live in Bournemouth where we have resided for the last 15 years and split our time between here and London.

  1. Q: How long have you been an accountant?

A: I have been an accountant for over 30 years and have seen many changes. One of the biggest changes I have noticed is client interaction technology has allowed us to communicate freely around the country and the world and is really helping us deliver the exceptional customer service that our clients rely on to run their businesses efficiently.

  1. Q: What attracted you to this field of business?

A: I think overall it’s my love of business as a whole understanding someone else’s business and helping them grow it and achieve its goals is highly rewarding whether that’s with my own business interests or with my clients. You can meet truly inspirational people in every town across the country who go out every day making a difference to their local community’s with passion and drive. At my accountancy firm Nr Sharland we have had the pleasure of working with some fantastic individuals and partnerships and watched them build a future for themselves and local people by creating jobs and opportunities in their local areas and across the rest of the UK.

  1. Q: What does a typical client look like for you?

A: I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical client. We work heavily in some sectors such as construction but this is because of our industry links and partnerships we have built up over the years. Although we have self-employed one man business and we also have companies who are floated on the stock market. I think the key is don’t look at the demographic look at the individual perceptions can be deceiving and just because someone works in one field at the moment doesn’t mean they won’t expand into a wide variety of different sectors.

  1. Q: What is one tip you use to overcome any challenge?

A: A challenge is only a challenge when you let it become too overwhelming. Take the fear out of the challenge, small tasks carried out well can overcome any obstacle. There is a great quote about building a wall, don’t look at it as I am going to build the best wall ever, concentrate on laying the best brick and then do it over and over again until you have the perfect wall. A challenge is only scary when it is bigger than you think is achievable; break it down and you will reach the end goal.

  1. Q: What are some of your future goals and aspirations?

A: We have just taken on a new office in Bournemouth and we are really excited about it. We want to continue to grow the business taking on a diversity of clients and delivering the service that our customers expect.

Thanks for taking the time to read my interview and it’s been a great opportunity to reflect over the years and look forward to the future.

Many thanks Nigel Sharland
