We’re on the brink of a brand New Year!  Although having resolutions has recently gotten a bad rep (because people don’t always do their part to fulfill them), I’ve made a super simple list that any startup entrepreneur can do!

#1. Launch That Product (or Service)!

Newsflash, there is no “perfect” time to launch a new product or company.  If you’re waiting for the “perfect” time, you’ll be waiting forever. Just… launch… it! Put it out there and see what happens.

#2. Market Your Product (or Service)

In 2016, I had several friends who launched GREAT products, and then let them fall by the wayside (sorry guys, I have to be honest here). There are lots or reasons why businesses fail like: running out of capital and having a bad business concept to begin with.  But, sometimes great businesses fail because nobody knows that they exist. You could have the best idea in the world, but if people don’t know about it, you won’t get the sale. If you’re going to go as far as launching a product or service, go the extra mile to advertise and market it. Whether you use Google Ads, Facebook Ads, email marketing, local papers, etc. Do your part to help your business stand out in the crowd so that it has a fair shot at success.

#3. Stop Worrying About What Others Think

Eeek! It’s easy to get caught up in other people’s opinions of you or your company, especially being that businesses are judged every day on sites like Yelp, Facebook, and Google. Don’t let criticism stop you from starting and running your business. People are going to judge, that’s what they do. Put yourself out there and be willing to constantly grow and improve. Stand behind your products and services, and do your absolute best.

#4. Don’t Be Afraid to Outsource

It’s really easy to get burnt out if you are taking on all of your daily tasks yourself. Chill out, and outsource! Don’t be afraid to delegate some of your responsibilities to other professionals. This can help you achieve more peace of mind while running your business.

#5. Get Into the “You are Not Your Business” Mindset

Separate you (the person), from you (the entrepreneur). This may be one of the most simple, yet trickiest things to accomplish. But, hey… I believe in you! Focus on having “you time”, and doing things that make you happy outside of business. Try not to take any business losses too personal. I know it’s challenging, but you create your business, it is a completely separate entity from your personal identity. Having clear boundaries can help you achieve a more balanced life.

#6. Update Your Business Cards

Ok, this is an easy one. How many entrepreneurs are using outdated business cards with old logos and pixelated graphics? How many startup entrepreneurs do not have cards for their new business? Don’t everyone raise their hands at once :-).  I find that serial entrepreneurs experience this challenge a lot. One of the best economical solutions is using a card service like Moo.com. Moo allows you to upload multiple card designs for a single order. So, whether you have one company or seven, you can tackle each.

#7. Take a Tiny Road Trip

Step away from everything.  Now, of course you can take an expensive trip to a remote island in a far away mystical land. But, what about the breathless adventures in your own backyard? Pick a day or three, go to the next nearby city or state and explore, relax, and rejuvenate. There are so many wonderful things in close proximity to us that we often miss out on.

#8. Do More on Social Media

Ok, this is something I can seriously stand to work on myself.   If you’ve fallen off of the social media bandwagon, it’s easy to hop back on. A status here, an update there, and you’re back on track! It doesn’t matter if you have a large following or a small one, an occasional post can help keep your business activity visible and up-to-date on the web.

#9. Create a Personal Mantra for Success

Mantras are positive statements or slogans that you repeat often. They can help encourage and motivate you through your personal journey to success. It’s easy to make your own mantra. I’ll go first: “I create my own success, I create my own happiness”. Now you give it a shot! Once you’ve got your mantra, say it a few times everyday to help motivate yourself.

It’s time to shake up the world by doing something amazingly, magically, innovative in 2017.  As startup owners, we have the unique capacity to shape the world into what we want it to be. On a professional level, we create solutions for everyday problems. On a personal level, we have the power to create happiness and wealth beyond our wildest dreams. Cheers to 2017! – Mark
