How were you inspired to become a plastic surgeon? When I was in medical school, I became aware of the amazing ways plastic surgery could benefit a patient’s life. People may have the impression that plastic surgery is an expression of vanity, but plastic surgeons can also benefit a patient’s overall quality of life. When a patient is satisfied with his or her appearance, he or she is happier and more fulfilled. When I was a medical student, I had only begun to discover the benefits of plastic surgery. I am glad I chose the specialty I did. When a patient comes into your office, how does a consultation proceed? My practice, San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, sees patients of all ages and backgrounds. I meet with each patient individually for a consultation. My patients have diverse needs and desires. Together, we design the look and feel that best fits their expectations. My practice uses advanced visualization techniques including the Vectra 3D system to enable patients to see the results of their possible procedures before any work has been done. Please tell us about some of your most popular procedures and treatments. My practice covers all areas of facial, body, and breast plastic surgery. I am well-known for my experience in breast reduction and augmentation. I also specialize in gynecomastia surgery or the removal of excess breast tissue in male patients. I have become an expert in female plastic surgery, including labiaplasty. I have a strong interest in rhinoplasty. My office provides the latest treatment in laser rejuvenation and injectables. Please explain breast reduction surgery and tell us why patients may benefit from this procedure. Many patients feel uncomfortable with their breasts and wish to change them. Breast reduction surgery can greatly benefit women who experience back pain due to their heavy breasts. It is also indicated for men with gynecomastia. Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess skin, breast tissue, and fat. The breast is then reshaped, and the nipple repositioned. Patients may need to take a week off from work or school to recover from the surgery. What advice would you give someone who wants plastic surgery or a cosmetic procedure? First, be sure you have the expertise of a board-certified doctor. Too many other types of professionals are offering treatment with injectables these days, from dentists to primary care doctors. It’s much safer and wiser to go with a plastic surgeon. For a patient who desires breast or body surgery like liposuction, I would first advise that a patient is at a healthy weight. This is crucial because if you don’t wait until you are at an optimal weight, you may have problems with skin stretching afterward. A psychological consultation might also be worthwhile to make sure that the patient does not have body dysmorphia. Examine the reasons why you are interested in plastic surgery. Are you doing it to please yourself, or to measure up to society’s difficult beauty standards? If you are coming from a place of self-love and making changes for your own sake rather than to conform to an impossible ideal, you will be happier and more satisfied with your results.
